Cat-o-ber, Brrrr months of Q4, Ballet teaching updates

Hello gentle person,

Boo, it's October!

Colorful leaves and seasonal changes subtle and dramatic are all around in Cologne. Unfortunately this includes some nasty viruses in which, with the changeable weather and exposure to many students, I am partaking. Doing my best to recover for an exciting and productive month, and wishing you health, both physical and mental at this transitional time.

School started in Nordrhein Westfalen, I've begun my elective classes for the academic year and this coming week I'm delighted to meet a new group of Advanced Dance Program participants, for whom I will give daily 9am ballet technique class. It may be that drop-ins are available again this year, but the group is larger so I will need to check availability. Let me know if you would potentially like to join!

Online Balletlicious Adaptive Ballet is moving from Fridays 8:30 CEST/CET to 12:30 October-December to accommodate ADP and Yogalicious Gentle Yoga will continue Mondays 19:00 CEST/CET this month.

I do love the Autumn Equinox, which was lovely, today is German Unification Day, and upcoming we have World Mental Health Day on the 10th, Coming Out Day on the 11th, and Daylight Savings in Germany (will will "fall back" on October 25th). While I stand for love and seek to keep positive, I know it has been a hard year for many and can be a particularly trying time of year. Remember that you are valued and loved and please reach out for resources and support when you are down.

Traditionally a time to prepare for the rigors of winter, I find it cozy and reassuring to make repairs, assess supplies, and get well-resourced where I can, so I've been going through my gear, including a recent article about those pieces of dance kit that have stuck with me the longest:

Other creations, recommendations, and questions for you are:

Listening:

Viewing:

  • Saw the "The Beauty of Ballroom - 10s across the borders" film premiere with friends, including a live performance from one of the featured artists was such a treat! Now in cinemas across Germany and hopefully available elsewhere as well, a fascinating look at these burgeoning dance spaces: "Four queer pioneers are growing flourishing communities in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore." #supportqueerfilms
  • Though I wasn't previously interested in baseball, I'm glad to have witnessed the WPBL inaugural season and thrilled our favorite team, the LA Queens, won the championship!
  • Looking forward to seeing the ballet "Manon" (Royal Ballet version) for the first time in the cinema in November...
  • The Secret History of Halloween Animals from Miranda/mirpeachy is a charming and educational exploration

Practicing:

Practicing Together LIVE / Adult Movement Classes:

  • Online Yogalicious Gentle Yoga. Mondays 7-8:00pm CEST/CET (7-8:00am HI until the time change, 6:00 after) provides a delicious mindful movement feast which balances strength, balance and coordination for mind, body, and spirit and is adaptable to all levels and conditions (English)
  • Online Balletlicious Adaptive Ballet Barre+, Fridays 12:30-13:30 CEST/CET (new time!) consists of mostly supported barre exercises with a little dancey centre work, building a strong, body-friendly, and graceful foundation for dance at home or anywhere in the world. (English)

Inquiring:

  • What will you create in the next 13 weeks?
  • How do you support your physical and mental health at demanding times?
  • Which experiences of the season do you not want to miss?
  • How can I support your practice?

Gladly share your response to the questions above or provide other updates by replying to this email.

Thank you for reading, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. Take care of yourself, pay attention, and keep moving mindfully!

Love, Blythe

Eclipsing expectations

Hello gentle person, Happy almost-September! Since my last message we have been enjoying warm weather in Cologne, and meanwhile my parents weathered Hurricane Lala in Hawai'i! They came through ok, though other areas were devastated by flooding. I've been dancing every day this month, with my own in-studio and online classes continuing as well as covering classes for colleagues taking vacation. Still had a bit more leisure time than I will soon, to explore some of the hobbies and activities...

Summer Arts and Crafts Camp journal spread

Hello gentle person, Happy almost-August, still solidly Summer Break from school here in Germany, but back-to-school in many parts of the US. Making the most of a lighter season of work myself for reflection, dabbling in seasonal activities and hobbies. Saddened to hear of the delivery truck attack on Berlin Pride, a reminder that we must keep coming together for the cause of love and acceptance, to demonstrate and protest and take political action as well as live our fullest, freest lives....

Hello gentle person, Happy July and Quarter 3, as well as Independence Day to my fellow Americans! Cologne celebrates PRIDE/Christopher Street Day this weekend and I'm also marking 7 years of living here (according to local tradition I'm now a local), the end of the Schoolyear, and the arrival of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which has already been hitting hard with a days-long heatwave bringing extreme temperatures to the city. It is also Disability Pride Month! Strawberry Birthday Cake...
