Splits this Summer next installment, Dancing Emancipation & all the fresh fruits

Hello beautiful,

Following my Swashbuckling Summer agenda, I've been teaching and dancing, researching topics such as Safe(r) Spaces, Eating Disorder Prevention, and Poetry, as well as getting outside to enjoy the warm weather in Cologne and consuming all the fresh local nectarines, plums, apples, figs, and grapes that friends are providing.

The article I published this week to the blog was originally part of my Theory and Criticism coursework for my MFA in Dance in 2014. Critical pedagogy and artistic practice continues to be relevant to my teaching, coaching, and creative practice over a decade later though since my graduate school years, I've made updates based on my qualitative in-studio encounters and from others who wish to honor the tradition of dance while supporting the whole dancer in contemporary society.

For example, I am inspired by the work of Katy Pyle's Ballez and just recently discovered Anna Morgan's research which seems to resonate, and continue to seek ongoing work in this area:

My other creations, recommendations, and questions for you are:

Listening:

  • "Wander" by Emmit Fenn & "Prelude No. 12" by Chris Zabriskie are the tracks to which I practiced Splits this Season Pt.1b (below)
  • It's hilarious what songs come to me at the end of the work week, like this niche time capsule, "I Like Tuh" by by Carnage, ft. ILOVEMAKONNEN (some times you just got to let loose and twerk)
  • Speaking of that track, and other songs that are inappropriate for work or educational settings, but (potentially) good to unwind on off hours, many find a home on my old Naughty Hot Summer playlist on Spotify which I described as "Explicit, frisky, dirty songs for sweaty summer evenings"

Inquiring:

  • How can we (artists, educators, students, community) promote respect and equality at the same time as expressive excellence?
  • What values and principles are key to your work?
  • What examples of innovative work in the performing arts do you wish to emulate?
  • Which artists, choreographers, theorists, and writers should I check out next?

Gladly share your response to the questions above or provide other updates by replying to this email or on social media if you are active there.

Thank you for reading, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. Take care of yourself, pay attention, and keep moving mindfully!

Love, Blythe

Hello beautiful, School began again in Nordrhein-Westfalen this week, and I'm in a flurry of preparation to meet new and returning students and teach and learn exciting things this fall! I've included a couple of schedule updates for September below and will keep you in the loop on further developments as I am able. What role can "gently Socratic" philosophical inquiry play in the context of performing arts education? I consider myself fortunate to have had the honor of participating in Dr....

Splits this Summer pt.3 Season of Stretching

Hello beautiful, July was about high summer, brought a heat wave and then cool rain to Cologne, and kicked off my "Swashbuckling Summer" and "Splits this Season" series with glowing energy and creativity. This week I've got an article about last month and two new videos for you, a flip-through of the month of July in my Seasonal Bullet Journal Book with reflections, and Part 3 of the Splits this Summer video sequence. Lovely online yogis or potential practitioners: please let me know if...

Butterfly Bullet Journal Spread & Ephemera

Hello beautiful, Light as a feather, fluttering in springtime and summer, having had encounters with butterflies in just about every place I have been, I always feel blessed by their gentle presence. Butterfly, Schmetterling, Farfalle, Papillon…I love their many names, their movements, the science and the mystery behind their lifecycles. My late ex mother in law Janine Kirkpatrick’s art faithfully depicting endangered butterflies I find particularly moving. Beloveds do come to mind as a...
