Flavorful Figure Fours, Birthday Joy, more on Dance Notes, savoring Summer

Hello beautiful,

So glad you are here! Welcome if you're new to the email newsletter, and know that I appreciate you whether you are "old" or "new!"

I'm very fortunate to be able to say that it was fabulous fun to turn 44! My birthday is an opportunity to reflect on and be grateful for my life, and the midpoint of the year also has me looking back on 2025 so far and what I want to accomplish in the next 6 months (more on that to come). Pretty wild that we kick of Quarter 3 next week...

If we've known each other for a bit, you'll be aware that note-taking and journaling are an important part of my artistic, scholarly, and professional practices. Research supports the efficacy of notetaking in supporting learning and creativity, now how do we put that into practice and actually make time and space to jot a few ideas down after dance class or rehearsal?

Recently I shared a video to YouTube with simple ways to take notes for dance and performing arts and this week's blog elaborates on those strategies:

My other creations, recommendations, and questions for you are:

Viewing:

  • "The Residence" comedy murder mystery miniseries with birdwatching and notebook nerdery is right down my alley!

Listening:

  • Songs I very well might not have heard if it weren't for a 5th & 6th Grade Hip Hop choreography collaboration this semester: "Mona Lisa Motion" by ZAH1DE,
  • "Sigma Boy" by Betsy & Мария Янковская, and
  • "Nivelul ulmator" by Iuliana Beregoi: so grateful to students for their contributions to my musical education!

Reading:

  • Did enjoy Olivia Waite's The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows, especially the descriptions of nature and the slow-burn romance of mature characters (not so much the spicy scenes) and am on to my next library loan of their books,
  • The Hellion's Waltz, another queer read during Pride Month, where so far I am appreciating the musical themes and artistic imagery

Practicing:

Practicing Together LIVE / Adult Movement Classes this week:

  • In-Studio Adult Beginner Ballet, 6-7:00pm CET Mondays, Tanzschule Tanzraum Nippes, Cologne, Germany creates a strong, body-friendly, and graceful foundation for dance (German)
  • Online Yogalicious Gentle Yoga. 7-8:00pm CET Tuesdays (7-8:00am HI) provides a delicious mindful movement feast which balances strength, balance and coordination for mind, body, and spirit adaptable to all levels and conditions (English)
  • Online Balletlicious Gentle Adaptive Ballet Barre+, 7:30-8:30am CET Fridays (Thursday p.m. HI) consists of mostly barre with a little dancey centre work, building a strong, body-friendly, and graceful foundation for dance at home or anywhere in the world (English)

Inquiring:

  • What kinds of notes do you take?
  • What do you struggle to remember?
  • How does writing contribute to your learning process?
  • What are you creating?

Gladly share your response to the questions above or provide other updates by replying to this email or on social media if you are active there.

Thank you for reading, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. Take care of yourself and keep moving mindfully!

Love, Blythe

Sunny Greetings poem & practice thumbnail image

Hello beautiful, I hope this email finds you well! Jumped right back in to teaching, publishing, and lots of events once returning to Cologne in May and into June, so just now wrapping up my reflection on the month of April, with May of course close on it's heels. April revelry took place on two continents and an island, was 50 percent "regular" teaching, creating, and normal publishing schedule and travel prep, 50 percent adventures in several places I feel at home: Portland, Oregon with...

Performing Arts Archiving Symposium ephemera from SIBMAS

Hello beautiful, Happy PRIDE Month! June also hosts some holidays falling this week: Pfingsten/Pentecost yesterday and today, the full Strawberry Moon on the 11th, Loving Day on the 12th. On a personal note, my Dad has an important medical procedure on the 13th, so sending good thoughts for a full recovery there for US Father's Day on Sunday the 15th. Three US WWII Bombs were found in Cologne last week and thankfully successfully defused and safely removed, making for a suspenseful but...
